“Good Advice” Pastor
Stephen Benton
The
scriptures report that Solomon spoke over 3,000 proverbs. Every so often I like reading the book of
Proverbs and Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon, just for the rich nuggets on
the issues of life, itself. With all of Solomon’s
wisdom, he himself says that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” That puts things in their proper
perspective. My mother used to entertain
us sometimes by singing a song called, Good
Advice. It was usually followed by a
song called, Route 66, usually
followed by another song having something to do with Marconi being a phony.” (I
don’t know where all that came from.)
Although I don’t recall all the words of the song called Good Advice, I do remember the overall
message of the song as it gave its views on good and
bad advice.
Because the
bible contains so much information on wisdom and
knowledge; doing and not doing, you
might ask yourself what issue actually leads the list of wisdom and knowledge, right and
wrong. That’s easy! In the Book of Psalms, which is written in an
ascending order from 1 to 150. Naturally then, Psalms #1 is first on the list
of things to know and do, or not do,
what ever the case may be.
The first verse says, “blessed is the man who walketh not in
the counsel of the ungodly.” That’s good
advice, no that’s great advice. There is nothing at all that the ungodly can
offer that will equal or exceed the word of God. One of Satan’s chief deceptions is “slipping”
advice to the children of God. We are
further aided in good advice with the words of Jesus in John 8:31 “ If ye
continue in God’s word, then are you my disciples, indeed. And you shall know
the truth and the truth shall make
you free.” In the last few messages when
the Holy Ghost referred to that verse that the expression, “about
everything.” That means that whatever we
face in our daily life, the truth spoken by the Holy Spirit exceeds anything
the world can offer. I received some
information from a wordly, so-called saint and
was excited to get it. Three months
later, after the expenditure of much work, time and
money, I had to scrap every piece of that “good advice.”
The
scriptures say, “in all thy ways acknowledge him and
he shall direct thy path.” Sometimes
because of the repetition of certain acts, we think we automatically know the
best way to go about performing. I urge you today, not to lean to your own understand ing,
nor walk in the counsel or the advice
of the ungodly. Seek the Lord first!
